Maritime Security in Africa – Beyond Piracy

Event Description

During the Danish Maritime Days 2018 a conference on maritime security in Africa is jointly organised by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Centre for Military Studies at University of Copenhagen and Danish Shipping, with support from Clipper Group.

Piracy, armed robbery and other forms of maritime criminal activity continue to constitute a serious challenge to the global shipping industry as well as to stability and development in countries affected by these illegal activities.

The waters surrounding the Horn of Africa, particularly off the coast of Somalia, have been severely plagued by piracy with significant economic and human cost for a number of actors. Today, the Gulf of Guinea is, however, considered the most dangerous maritime region for the shipping industry to navigate through.

The aim of the conference is to review current and possible future challenges to maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and the Horn of Africa. Gaps, shortcomings, and challenges in existing efforts to address maritime security threats will be identified leading to discussions on possible novel ways to approach these challenges.
