Securing a multimodal CO2 transport network: Ports as a key enabler

Round table debate on 6 March 2024

The Commission estimates, in the Industrial Carbon Management strategy, that 280 million tonnes CO2 needs to be captured to meet the 90% GHG emission reduction target in 2040. An ambition which stresses the need for establishing a suitable CCS value chain. The maritime sector will be an integral part of transporting CO2 in CCS processes, which require renewed connections between land and sea.

The CCS value chain will require new specialised CO2 ships and pipeline infrastructure. The key enabler for the multimodal connection will be the ports. Consequently, coordination with regards to the needs of the ports is crucial to shape the framework around a CCS market. This will additionally help to de-risk investments which can spark the European venture of CCS.

To address these topics we have gathered following panel:

  • Anaëlle Boudry, Senior Policy Advisor – ESPO

  • Sofie Cuypers, Public Affairs Advisor - Port of Antwerp-Bruges

  • Johanna Fiksdahl, CCUS Policy Advisor - European Commission DG Energy

  • Rob van der Meer, Industrial Policy Director - CEMBUREAU

  • Evita Goša, Member of the Management Board – SCHWENK Latvija

  • Spyros Leoussis, Chief Commercial Officer - Capital Gas Management Corp.

  • Peter Hindsberger, Senior Regulatory & Public Affairs Manager - INEOS Energy Denmark
Moderated by Janis Volberts, Climate Technology and Policy Manager Baltics - Bellona Europa
