Ammonia as a Fuel for Shipping

Ammonia as a Fuel for Shipping

BACKGROUND
Ammonia has emerged as a potential alternative to traditional marine fuels on the road to reduce GHG-emissions from shipping. It requires innovation when it comes to the adaptation of operations, design, and training to embrace the potential of ammonia-powered vessels. Furthermore, using ammonia as a marine fuel involves safety hazards such as toxicity which are crucial to understand so safeguards can be introduced. Crew safety is also a key theme when considering transitioning to ammonia fueled ships.

The Mærsk McKinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping have accumulated important expertise related to ammonia as a marine fuel and they would like to share some findings from a few of their projects especially the project on an Inherently safer design of ammonia-fueled vessels and key findings from the project on competencies & training for seafarers on board ammonia fueled ships.
